Graduated from Boston University (B.A.), Ellen Hirsch de Haan received her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; and completed her law studies at the University of Miami School of Law. She is a member of the Florida Bar, the American Bar Association, and the College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL).
Ms. de Haan is a well-known spokesperson for community associations having appeared locally on many television news broadcasts and talk shows and nationally on ABC World News Tonight, A Current Affair, Inside Report, and on QVC/Home Shopping Network. In addition, she was a speaker at the 1999 Communities of Tomorrow Summit, a national dialogue on excellence in community design, governance, and management held in Washington, D.C., and she was a featured speaker at the 5th Annual Condominium Conference of the Canadian Condominium Institute and Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario, in Toronto.
In addition to being a past co-editor of and current contributor to her firm's Community Up-Date newsletter, Ms. de Haan has published numerous articles in Probate & Property, the magazine of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the American Bar Association, the Journal of Community Association Law, Elder's Advisor, The Journal of Elder Law and Post-Retirement Planning. Ms. de Haan is also a contributing editor for Common Ground, the award-winning CAI bimonthly journal of community associations, to which she has contributed extensively for over a decade.
Ms. de Haan has authored two books: Aging in Place: The Emergence of Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities, in 1998; and Self-Management: A Guide for the Small Community Association, in 2001, published by Community Associations Institute.
Ms. de Haan has lectured extensively, not only throughout Florida, but also nationally at conferences, professional meetings, and colleges and universities, as well as the National Community Association Law Seminar, several chapters of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and annually, for her firm's Community Associations Workshops.
Ms. de Haan develops and teaches certified continuing education courses for Florida Community Association Managers, and is a member of the National CAI Teaching Faculty, as part of the Professional Management Development Program. She has developed curriculum materials, and trained the faculty members under a CAI contract with the State of Florida, to provide educational programs for cooperatives and condominium association board members and owners.
Ms. de Haan has sat on many national and local boards including the national Community Associations Institute (CAI), of which she is past president, CAI Broward County Chapter, and the CAI Suncoast Chapter. Ms. de Haan is a member of the Board of Advisors of the University of Miami School of Law Institute on Condominium and Cluster Developments and the Board of Advisors for the Community Association Management Insider published by Brownstone Publishers, Inc.
In addition to serving as an officer of many organizations, Ms. de Haan has served on numerous task forces and committees including the committees to revise and rewrite the State of Florida License Examination for Community Association Managers and the Study Guide for the Examination; the State of Florida Escalator Safety Task Force; the American Bar Association Committee on Condominiums, Cooperatives and Associations, and the National CAI Public Policy Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and Public Affairs Council.
Ms. de Haan's service to Community Associations Institute has earned her CAI's Outstanding Volunteer Service Award (1994 and 2003), Author of the Year Award (1997-1998), and the Distinguished Service Award (2002).
